Sports, Athletics and Chiropractic

Does your neighbourhood/community sports team need a doctor of chiropractic? Why not ask your chiropractor if he or she is interested in working with them?

Chiropractic can give your athletic endeavours an edge. That's why you'll find chiropractors as "team doctors" for professional, college, high school, junior high and elementary school football, basketball, baseball, ice-hockey, handball, rugby, soccer and weightlifting teams. That's also why chiropractic has been used by champions: Tim Witherspoon, Ken Norton and Evander Holyfield of boxing; Ivan Lendl, Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe of tennis; Marcello Angelini and Daniella Buson of ballet; plus world class bikers, golfers and even racing car drivers.

Many amateur and professional athletes wouldn't dream of competing without first getting a chiropractic spinal checkup.

That's why 75% of the San Francisco 49ers received chiropractic care the day they played -- and won -- the 1990 Super Bowl.1 And this is also why 16 chiropractors from 12 countries were present at the 1992 Olympics. 2

How about you? Want that winning edge? A little more balance? A little more lightness to your step? Try a chiropractic "shaping up" adjustment of the spine.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries nearly always jar and misalign the spinal column; a blow to the ribs, legs, feet, head, shoulder or torso always radiates to the centre of the body -- that's why a chiropractic checkup is needed when you are injured, regardless of the nature of the injury. Chiropractic is needed, in fact, even when medical procedures may also be necessary.

Why? If an injury is serious enough to need medical care, the spine is almost always damaged to a greater or lesser degree. Further, medical doctors are simply not trained to locate and correct spinal subluxations -- that is the realm of the doctor of chiropractic.

As superstar Joe Montana stated, "I only wish I had tried chiropractic care a few years ago when I first started having back pain, and maybe this surgery would never have happened." 3

Evander Holyfield, World Heavy-Weight Boxing Champion, echoes the attitude of many world-famous athletes: "I found that going to a chiropractor helps my performance. Once I drove 20 miles to see a chiropractor before a fight. I have to have my adjustment before I go into the ring." 4

How about you? Getting in shape should always include a chiropractic shaping up of the spine.

First Down and Chiropractic to go

When you witness a crushing tackle during a game of Monday Night Football, you probably wonder how these guys can continue to go out and play again the following week. Besides simply being big and tough, one way players in the National Football League (NFL) get back on their feet is through chiropractic treatment. Sports chiropractors focus on treating injuries of the muscles and bones. With back pain alone appearing in as many as 75% of professional athletes every year, and possibly even greater percentage of football players, NFL players are requiring chiropractic care for their aches and pains.

To determine the use of chiropractic in the NFL, a questionnaire was sent to the head athletic trainers of every team in the league. The questions related to frequency and type of treatment used to treat injured players. Of the two-thirds of all trainers who responded, the results indicate a strong use of chiropractic.

  • 45% of the NFL trainers had personally seen a chiropractor;
  • 77% of trainers had referred players to a chiropractor; and
  • 31% of NFL teams had an official chiropractor on their staff.
The trainers surveyed in this study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics predominantly referred players to chiropractors for low back pain, neck injury, and headaches. With professional sports organizations beginning to embrace chiropractic, perhaps more of the general public will seek out this natural, safe alternative to drugs and surgery.
