Dr. Larry Goes The Distance For Chemical Dependency Centre
Chemical dependency is defined as a state in which physical and/or psychological dependence on alcohol or a mood altering chemical exists. The effects of alcohol and drug addiction are devastating not only to the individual but also to his family and society as a whole. It is estimated that at least 10% of our population suffer from this disease but many never seek treatment due to the social stigma, denial of the condition and/or the cost of treatment.
Dr. Smith is a veteran of over 14 full marathons and 25 triathlons, but the Iron Man Triathlon is a first for him. The race consists of a 2.4 mile swim; followed by a 112 mile bike ride; followed by a 26 mile marathon.
In December, 2000, he raised more than $4000 for arthritis research by running as an Arthritis Society sponsored runner in the Hawaii Marathon. He hopes to better his fundraising efforts in 2006.
"The cost of treatment is out of reach for most people", said Dr. Larry. "The Edgewood Foundation offers financial aid to those who require treatment but cannot afford it." Please help support the Edgewood Foundation and their efforts in reducing the overwhelming impact of the disease of addiction on individuals, families and society. www.edgewood.ca/foundation_donate_form.asp
